Report on new child and family support agency due in July

Children's Minister Frances Fitzgerald has committed to implementing the recommendations of the Independent Child Death Review Group.

Children's Minister Frances Fitzgerald has committed to implementing the recommendations of the Independent Child Death Review Group.

However the minister has warned that change will not happen overnight.

The group yesterday published its report into the deaths of 196 children in the 10 years to 2010, and described it as a "devastating indictment" of social services.

The Government has confirmed will hold a children's referendum in the autumn.

Minister Fitzgerald appeared at the Joint Committee on Health and children this morning.

"The development of a new child and family support agency is going to be critical in relation to responding and reforming the system of State care and intervention," she said.

"I met with the task force this morning - I will be receiving their very comprehensive report on what services ought to be part of the new child and family support agency in July."
