The Rehab group today highlighted a number of cuts proposed in the Bord Snip Nua report which it says would have a disproportionate effect on people with disabilities.

“Rehab Group remains deeply concerned that a number of recommendations in this report would, if implemented, have a significant and negative effect on the lives of people with disabilities," said CEO Angela Kerins.

"Reductions in expenditure should be fair and proportionate, not targeted at those who are least able to cope with a ‘cut’."

Among the cuts that are the subject of concern are proposals to reduce spending on disability services; to reduce social welfare rates; to remove the weekly training bonus payable to the long-term unemployed; to change entitlements to medical cards and to cut the numbers of special needs assistants in schools.

Ms Kerins said it was imperative that any cuts are complemented by initiatives which will allow Ireland to draw on all its resources, skills and talents to rebuild its economy for the good of all.
