Recount underway after dramatic three-vote win

There were dramatic scenes at the Clare Count centre today, where Fianna Fail’s Claire Colleran Molloy pipped Fine Gael rival Ger O’Halloran by three votes to grab the final seat.

The win by Ms Colleran Molloy gives FF three seats in the eight seat Ennis electoral area.

A sister of The Irish Daily Star editor Ger Colleran, Cllr Colleran-Molloy was 11 votes behind O’Halloran going into the last count.

Twenty votes from independent Ann Norton, with six going to O’Halloran, helped her to the surprise win, 999 votes to 996.

FG has requested a recount and that is currently taking place.
