Rail services return to normal as passengers' group calls on Minister to intervene
Rail services return to normal this morning following a two-day strike.
The action by members of SIPTU and the National Bus and Rail Union affected tens of thousands of commuters yesterday, as well as GAA supporters travelling to Croke Park on Sunday.
The action was called after Irish Rail implemented pay cuts of up to 6%, which it says are necessary to secure the future of the company.
The unions plan to go on strike again on September 7, 8 and 21.
Spokesperson for the group Rail Users Ireland Mark Gleeson said it was time for the Transport Minister Paschal Donohue to intervene.
"It's a public service (and) the Minister's department is paying for it - he's the sole shareholder. He needs to take a greater interest and get people round a table to sort this out," he said.
