Quinn: Junior Cert reform is not up for negotiation
The Minister for Education has defended his proposed overhaul of the Junior Cert.
Ruairí Quinn said the Government is dealing with the concerns of teachers, but that it can't allow them to hold up the reforms.
The reforms are due to kick in from next year, when teachers will have a new English syllabus for exams in 2018. However, two teachers' unions are threatening industrial action over the changes.
"Some people regard and spell consultation as "n-e-g-o-t-i-a-t-i-o-n". It is not the same," he said.
"There will be plenty of consultation, but at the end of the day, politicians on this side of this house make decisions and we are accountable for them.
"And I'm happy to be accountable for the decisions I've made, following the professional advice I've received."
