Puppeteer Eugene Lambert has died at the age of 82.

Originally from Sligo, he entertained generations of Irish children with well known characters like 'Judge' the dog and played the role of 'O'Brien' in the popular television series 'Wanderley Wagon'.

He also founded the Lambert Puppet Theatre in Dublin in 1972, the team of which was behind shows such as 'Bosco'.

Mr Lambert died last night peacefully at his home in Monkstown, Dublin. He is survived by his wife and eight of their ten children.

Minister for Arts, Sports and Tourism Martin Cullen paid tribute to the children's entertainer, describing him as "a master of the art of puppetry".

Lambert's work has "enriched the lives of both adults and children" across the country, Minister Cullen said.
