Public service committee to invite Shatter over GSOC bugging

The Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, is to be quizzed on his intentions to deal with alleged bugging at the headquarters of the Garda Ombudsman Commission.

The Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight is to invite Alan Shatter to appear as a matter of urgency.

TDs have also asked GSOC to hand over a full version of an independent report into suspected surveillance at its offices.

Committee Chairman Padraig Mac Lochlainn says it's important the Minister explains how he intends to deal with the issue

"We are inviting the Minister … to come before us, hopefully next weeks – as soon as possible –to outline his perspectives on this, and what he proposes to do about the evidence presented.

"We also are going to correspond with GSOC, and request an unredacted copy of the security report on a confidential basis."

Labour Senator Susan O'Keefe, who is also on the committee, said it is "'definitely in the public interest" that more detail comes out.

She said concerns about a leak from the office should be investigated, but that should be separate from looking into the bugging allegations.
