Prevention is better than cure: That's the message from doctors today in relation to the whooping cough.
The incidence of the infection has more than doubled in just two years.
Pregnant women are being urged to vaccinate themselves against the cough, as the most frequent source of the infection is adults.
Doctor Brian Reidy from the Department of Paediatrics at the National University of Ireland in Galway said: "The whooping cough can be a very serious infection, particularly in infants and can in certain tragic cases, be fatal. It's important that it's prevented (or) caught early."
