President visits flood-hit areas of Limerick

The President is paying tribute to the sense of community spirit which emerged during the most recent flooding.

Michael D Higgins has been visiting King's Island Youth and Community Centre in Limerick, an area badly hit by flood damage last week.

The President praised the emergency services for their response to the crisis, but also the members of the local community who helped their neighbours – citing a local named Gerry who brought 200 people from their homes in his horse and trap.

"I think what I wanted to emphasise was the way that it gave a great example of real solidarity and real community," he said.
