President pays tribute to those who fought in the Easter Rising
The President has paid tribute to those who fought in the Easter Rising at a gathering of their relatives in Dublin this evening.
President Higgins said those who fought did so 'without expectation of living to see what could be subsequently achieved in the name of Irish freedom'.
The event took place in the RDS in Dublin.
Meanwhile, as Ireland marks the centenary of the Easter Rising - we're being urged to do more to promote equality.
The former head of the Dublin Rape Crisis Network has said it is important women take note of the ideals contained in the Proclamation of Independence.
Ellen O'Malley Dunlop - who is running in the Seanad Elections says there's still more work to be done: “We know that one in ten report the crime of sexual violence in Ireland
We know that from the report that 200,000 Irish women over their lifetime will be the victim of sexual violence and 60,000 men
“We really have a problem in Ireland with acknowledging these problems.”
