Power 'back to normal' after widespread outages

ESB says power outages have been reduced to normal levels nationwide with less than 1,500 people without electricity this afternoon.

Thunder and lightening storms caused havoc on the network this morning with the southern half of the country worst affected.

The energy provider has had teams working through the day to ensure that power is restored to every customer.

Bevin Cody is corporate communications manager with the ESB.

"This morning we had about 7,000 customers without power as a result of a lightning storm that came across the south of the country," she said.

"But this evening we are back to about 1,500 people without power throughout the country.

"Crews are still out with the aim of restoring power to everybody by about teatime."
