Two-year-old Kate Gilmore and three-month-old Grace Gilmore were on a walk with their father John when they were struck by a car on the N17 in Dunmore in Tuam.

The girls were both taken to University College Hospital Galway where they were pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

They were the only children of construction engineer Mr Gilmore and his wife Michelle, who works for the Health Service Executive. Both parents are from the Tuam area.

Mr Gilmore and the driver of the vehicle have been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
