There was a drop of over 30% in the number of planning permissions granted for new homes in the first quarter of the year.

The Central Statistics Office says 1,604 units got the green light in the first three months of 2014, down from 2,308 in the same period of 2013.

Applications to build new apartments were down by nearly two thirds, while those relating to new houses were down by more than one fifth.
