The Department of Finance was targeted in a petrol bomb attack, gardaí said today.

A bottle was thrown at an office window on Merrion Street in central Dublin by a man shortly before 11pm last night.

It is understood a garda on duty in the area spotted the small fire and alerted the Fire Brigade.

No-one was injured in the attack on the ground floor office, but a small amount of damage was caused to the building.

A Garda spokesman said a lone man carried out the attack after walking towards Merrion Street from the Baggotrath Lane direction at 10.50pm.

“The man was wearing a dark-coloured woolly hat and his face was covered by a scarf,” he said.

“He wore a black fleece top that zipped up at the front with a white logo on it. The tee-shirt he had on underneath was light in colour. He also wore dark blue jeans.”

Officers at Pearse Street appealed for anyone who was in the area between 10.15pm and 11.15pm and who may have witnessed the incident or the suspect to come forward.

“We are also appealing to any taxi drivers who were working the area and who may have picked up, or dropped off, a fare matching the above description to contact us,” a spokesman added.
