Peru drugs duo jailed for more than six years

Melissa Reid and Michaella McCollum Connolly have been sentenced to six years and eight months in prison by a court in Peru after pleading guilty to drug smuggling charges.

The pair were arrested last August after cocaine was found in their luggage as they tried to board a flight at Lima airport.

They had initially said they were forced by armed men to carry the drugs, but later pleaded guilty.

It is understood the 20-year-old Michaella from Dungannon, Co Tyrone, and the 20-year-old Melissa from Glasgow will serve at least two years in prison in Peru.
