People in flood-prone areas 'could be offered money to move'

People living in flood-prone areas could be offered up to €200,000 to move house.

According to the Irish Times, a memo will be brought to tomorrow's Cabinet meeting outlining the idea, which would target specific homeowners whose property is not sustainable, who cannot get insurance and who have no other alternative.

Junior Minister with responsibility for the area, Sean Canney, said that he is hopeful of agreement amongst ministers.

He stressed that it would be a voluntary scheme and "not everyone will want to move".
