A bus driver and four passengers today escaped injury after a bus caught fire.

The blaze broke out in the engine compartment of the Bus Eireann vehicle during a scheduled service in Cork.

Both Bus Eireann and the Gardaí have launched investigations into the fire which occurred at Kilworth, between Fermoy and Mitchelstown, after 7.30am.

The driver evacuated passengers after he noticed smoke coming from the rear of the 2004 single storey Scania bus.

None of the five people were injured in the incident.

A Bus Eireann spokesman said the bus passed a vehicle test in July and was serviced at the end of last month.

He said it was too early to say what caused the fire.

Twenty passengers, including a number of schoolchildren, had earlier been dropped off in Fermoy by the bus.
