O'Sullivan 'not happy' that children are baptised to get into schools

The Education Minister Jan O'Sullivan says she is "not happy" that some children are being baptised just to get into schools.

Jan O'Sullivan has acknowledged that divestment has so far been much slower than the Government had hoped.

Last week Archbishop of Dublin Diarmaid Martin defended the rule prioritising baptised children in Catholic schools.

Minister O'Sullivan says nobody should be happy that some children are being christened solely to get into schools.

She said: "I think the idea that somebody has to be baptised, or chooses to be baptised to get into a school, but actually doesn't have any commitment to the particular religious denomination, I wouldn't be happy with that, I don't think churches should be happy with it either.

"But I suppose there is a constraint around the legislation that we currently have and the constitutional provision.

"I think that's something that will have to be debated in the context of whoever is going to come into Government."
