Three women and one child have been killed in a two-vehicle crash in Co Westmeath, it has been reported.

Three women and one child have been killed in a two-vehicle crash in Co Westmeath, it has been reported.

The crash between a car and a jeep took place near Port na Shangan, just north of Mullingar on the main N4 Dublin to Sligo road.

The accident happened on a straight stretch of road just after 7.30am.

It is understood the adults and child who died were all travelling in the same vehicle.

Gardaí and emergency services are at the scene. The road is closed and a major investigation has been set up.

Gardaí have asked anyone travelling on the road between 7am and 8am this morning and who noticed anything to contact them.
