The Oireachtas communications committee is to write to RTÉ asking it to explain its approach to libel complaints.

It follows reports that the broadcaster paid 85,000 euro to settle a complaint taken by the Iona Institute and others following remarks made by a guest on a TV show last month.

It's understood the committee will consider RTÉ's response before deciding whether to seek a full hearing with senior RTÉ managers.

Senior executives including the director-general, Noel Curran, are due before the committee for a pre-scheduled meeting in the coming weeks.
