Offaly accident marks more farming deaths than all of last year

There's growing concern over farm safety, after the number of deaths on Irish farms this year has already exceeded the total for all of last year.

A five-year-old boy died in a farming accident in county Offaly yesterday, bringing to 17 the total number of farm fatalities to date.

16 people died in farming accidents last year. A quarter of those who lost their lives this year were children.

"Remember that farm is a place of work," said Patrick Donohoe, News Correspondent with the Irish Farmers Journal.

"According to the HSA, it's the most dangerous occupation in the country at the minute, and unfortunately the stats over the last year are backing that up."
