Numbers of one-parent families in poverty rising 'due to Government policies'

Government choices are pushing thousands of children and parents from one-parent families into poverty in Ireland, according to OneFamily.

The organisation for people parenting alone, which is is launching its Annual Review today, says that calls to its askonefamily helpline rose by 30% last year.

The body's CEO, Karen Kiernan, says they're responding to an unprecedented rise in numbers of distressed callers due to poor Government decisions.

She said: "The number of callers to our national helpline is increasing in unprecedented numbers really over the last of years.

"In 2014 we saw helpline numbers go up by 30% due to Government policies around moving people who are on the one-parent family payment off that payment.

"People have been phoning us distressed about that process, because many of them have lost money due to these reforms."
