Details have emerged today of an inventory of tapes from Garda station recordings around the country.

A report in The Irish Times says the internal research was compiled in February, and is in two parts.

The first relates to dictaphone recordings made before 2008, and lists the number of tapes stored from Garda divisions, with Louth having the highest total at 356.

The lowest number came from Donegal at 31.

The number from a selection of other Garda divisions were: Limerick 109, Cork Anglesea Street 124; Cork North 95, Wexford 136, Waterford 134, Roscommon/ Longford 135 and Mayo 95.

According to the report, the second half of the inventory relates to recordings made on new solid state 'NICE' recorders since 2008.
