The number of people with private health insurance has increased to 43%.

Research by the Health Insurance Authority also found that 89% of people are happy with their cover.

The annual cost of a policy has decreased slightly from €1,925 in 2015 to €1,875 in 2017.

Respondents said that their two main reasons for having insurance are the cost of treatment and the inadequate standard of public services.

Less than one in four have ever switched provider, while 54% who switched last year said price was a factor.
