The Finance Minister Michael Noonan has said extra funding will be made available to people who have had to leave their homes because of flooding.
"If extra money is needed, we will provide it," he said.
The Government has a €10m fund in place to provide relief to householders who do not have insurance.
Minister at the Office of Public Works Brian Hayes has admitted the fund will not be adequate to meet the demand, after days of heavy rain and flooding in western and southern coastal areas.
Confronted by residents of St Mary's Park in Limerick, Minister Hayes assured them that flood defences would be put in place.
"Every government department and the local authorities must work together to ensure that people never, ever have to go through this again," he said.
