No reason not to publish garda whistleblower's evidence - McDonald

A member of the Public Accounts Committee has called for the release of evidence given by a Garda whistleblower yesterday.

Sinn Féin's Mary Lou McDonald said there is no reason not to publish the evidence given by Sergeant Maurice McCabe yesterday.

The hearing was held in private session, and members have been told that a transcript will not be released.

But Deputy McDonald said members followed their strict legal advice, and nobody would be damaged by the release of his allegations.

"I think the transcript should be made public. I don't think there's any value in the conduct of the business of a committee to keep things secret or private … unless there is a compelling reason to do so," she said.

"And I don't think that is the case now."
