New apartment block planned for Shankill Road

A new block of private apartments is due to be built in the notorious loyalist stronghold of Shankill Road in a further sign of the normalisation of society in the North.

A new block of private apartments is due to be built in the notorious loyalist stronghold of Shankill Road in a further sign of the normalisation of society in the North.

The apartments are the first such development in the deprived area of west Belfast for more than 30 years.

The site is only a few minutes' walk from Belfast city centre and the estate agent selling the apartments says it is becoming a more vibrant place to live.

Local DUP councillor Diane Dodds, however, says £200,000 (€292,417) apartments are not what young families in the area need.
