A 50-year-old mother whose son pulled her from the burning family home, has died.

A 50-year-old mother whose son pulled her from the burning family home, has died.

The woman's 20-year-old son returned home at 4.30am to find the house at Mountain View, Hacketstown, Co Carlow on fire.

He pulled his mother out of the house, but she was later pronounced dead. Her body has been taken to Waterford Regional Hospital where a post mortem examination will be held.

Gardaí are investigating and the scene is preserved for a technical examination, which is underway.

Early indications are that the fire started accidentally.
