Most parents paying €400 a month to support child in college

Four out of five Irish parents contribute more than €400 a month to support one child with their college expenses.

Research carried out by the Irish League of Credit Unions shows parents are saving for up to eight years to put one child through college.

The survey also found the majority of Irish students were working throughout the academic year to help fund their studies.

Head of communications with the Irish League of Credit Unions Mandy Johnston said many people enlisted their services in order to meet the costs of sending a child to college.

"Thirty percent of people who send their children to college fund that education through loans from credit unions," she said.

"We've seen a vast increase in the number of families looking to credit unions to fund college education in the last number of years.

"We would recommend people start very early with a savings plan for their children."
