The Irish surfer who has been missing off the coast of Australia has been named as 19-year-old Stuart Butler.

Fears are growing for the Dubliner, who was caught in a riptide in Byron Bay in New South Wales on Saturday.

The 19-year-old had gone to the beach with two friends, who also got into difficulty but were later rescued.

Members of Byron Bay police, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and local volunteers are all involved in the search effort, which will resume at about 10pm tonight Irish time after being called off due to low light.
