Ministers sign off on law guaranteeing lawyer for anyone arrested in EU

European ministers have signed off on plans guaranteeing the right to a lawyer for anyone involved in criminal proceedings.

Justice ministers have signed off on the proposals which have already been approved by MEPs.

The rules will require EU member states to introduce new laws where someone is automatically notified of a person's arrest.

They are aimed at making sure that people who might be arrested in an EU country outside their own still retain the right to a fair trial.
