Minister slams 'bananas' compensation culture

Minister of State at the Department of Finance and the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform, Michael D’Arcy has criticised the “bananas, off the wall amounts” that “some members of the judiciary” are awarding in cases.

“There is a compensation culture in the State,” he told RTÉ’s Today with Sean O’Rourke show.

“If it continues (high awards) then businesses will close in sector after sector,” he warned.

He was responding to complaints from businesses that provide play facilities who say they will have to close because of spiralling insurance costs.

Mr D’Arcy said that the Employment Liability and the Public Liability report and the Nicholas Kearns report had been completed in the last year.

“We’re going in the right direction.”

He said he hopes that the Book of Quantum can be “recalibrated” in the coming weeks, or months.

“It will absolutely be before the summer recess.

“Everything I am doing is to ensure that the Book of Quantum is recalibrated.

“I am not happy with the judiciary continuing the way they do. I am not prepared to allow it to continue.”
