Minister for Children Brian Lenihan has rejected criticism of yesterday's Budget measures in the area of children.

The Budget included an increase in child benefit and the introduction of a new payment for the parents of children at risk of poverty.

However, a number of pressure groups say these measures do not go far enough to tackle child poverty or help parents meet childcare costs.

Despite this, Mr Lenihan said today that the Budget was "excellent" and did not let parents down in the area of childcare costs.

He also said he was not aware of any disappointment with the Budget in relation to children.
