Minister met with wall of silence at doctors' conference

The Minister for Primary Care Alex White has been met with a wall of silence at the IMO conference in Co Kildare.

Alex White is addressing a meeting of 300 GPs at the union’s annual conference, where doctors have been expressing their anger about plans for free GP Care for children under six.

The Minister was told that primary care is now "in crisis", and that the new GP contract will “decimate” general practice in Ireland.

However, Alex White is standing over the policy.

"The decision to start with this age cohort is in accordance with the recommendations of the expert advisory group on the early-years strategy," he said.

"This framework signals a shift in policy towards earlier intervention and ensuring the provision of quality early-years services and interventions aimed at promoting best outcomes for children."
