Minister extends Garda Commissioner's job contract

The Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan is to stay in his job for an extra two years.

Commissioner Callinan was due to retire in August of next year, but the Justice Minister Alan Shatter has confirmed his term of office is being extended until August 2015.

Minister Shatter said he wants continuity in Garda leadership during the current period of "significant organisation reform" within the force and is delighted that Commissioner Callinan has agreed to the extension.
