MEPs to gather in Strasbourg to call for X legislation

Over 50 MEPs will gather outside the European Parliament in Strasbourg later to call for Ireland to legislate for the X case.

It is part of an International Day of Protest in the wake of the death of Savita Halapanavar.

A second evening of debate will take place in the Dáil today before TD's vote on a Sinn Féin motion to address the issue.

Socialist MEP Paul Murphy is taking part in today's protest and he says the public anger shows no signs of abating: "Well I think the government will tell us to await this report and attempt to demobilise the protests, telling us we should trust the politicians.

"People will say we can't trust the establishment politicians on this because they had 20 years from the X case to introduce legislation. They failed to do so."
