McGuinness: PAC to ask Varadkar for report on measures to tackle hospital waiting lists

The chairman of the Public Accounts Committee has said treating people in Irish hospitals as day patients has real benefits in terms of freeing up in-patient beds and reducing costs in overnight care and in waiting list numbers.

The Committee will meet today to consider a special report of the Comptroller and Auditor General on the management of elective day surgery in Irish hospitals.

John McGuinness said the report pointed to considerable room for improvement in the management of elective day surgery.

He also said the Minister for Health would be asked for a report following today's hearing, to outline "what he intends to do to improve the situation for patients that are now waiting for years on waiting lists".
