Martin opposes sale of State assets

Fianna Fáil Micheál Martin leader said today that the sale of State assets is being driven by the Government, not the Troika.

The Cabinet is discussing potential sell-offs, including the minority stake in Aer Lingus, as well as parts of Coillte and Dublin Port.

The sell-off of a minority stake in the ESB has already been agreed.

The Coalition has always insisted that the disposal of State assets was a requirement of the deal agreed by the last Government, but Micheál Martin said that is not the case.

"I get the sense that this Government is looking for ways of raising money and cutting money that has the least electoral impact on their support base," he said.

"It's quite cynical, but that's, in essence, what they are about.

"And then they will use the broad coverage of the Troika to try and get away with it.

"I think they should do what's right for the country, the selling of State assets, particularly in the energy area, is not something we would support."
