Micheál Martin has admitted the Government participated in a "consensus" when it came to the economy.

Micheál Martin has admitted the Government participated in a "consensus" when it came to the economy.

The newly elected leader of Fianna Fáil has again apologised for the Government's mistakes, and for any he made as a Minister.

He says too much investment was made in construction, that the Government spent too much and eroded taxes.

Deputy Martin says he did not shout stop, but that many others were also involved in the mistakes of the past.

"We as a Government participated in this consensus that everything was ok and we spent too much…The oversight of the regulatory system was also not strong enough to spot the fundamental dangers that were occurring."
