The body of a man has been recovered from the banks of the River Shannon in Limerick City today.

The man was seen entering the river at Thomond Bridge around 1.45am.

An extensive search was launched involving Limerick Marine Search and Rescue Service, Limerick City and County Fire Service, the Shannon-based Coast Guard rescue helicopter R115 and gardaí.

Searches recommended this morning after search parties were stood down last night after nothing was found.

"The man's body was recovered at 2.30pm just beyond Barrington's Pier," said a source close to the recovery operation.

"He was spotted on the river bank by Rescue 115 who were in the air at the time and his body was recovered in a joint effort by crews on boats from the marine rescue service and the fire service."
