Man who burgled five premises in one night gets five years

A Blanchardstown man who burgled five premises in Swords in one night has been given a five-year sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for these and other offences.

A Blanchardstown man who burgled five premises in Swords in one night has been given a five-year sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for these and other offences.

Jason Glennon (aged 31) told a staff member at a nursing home he was attempting to steal items from that he was there to visit his father and told a homeowner who disturbed him that he was in the house to read her meter.

Glennon, of Whitestown Avenue, pleaded guilty to 10 burglaries across north Dublin, possession of stolen property and stealing a car on dates between November 2005 and March 2008.

Judge Katherine Delahunt said the burglary in the nursing home had been a very serious offence considering "the nature of the establishment and the vulnerability of the people in it".

She suspended the last year of the sentence after she accepted that there was never a violent confrontation between Glennon and his victims.

Garda Gary McEntee told Mr Ronan Kennedy BL, prosecuting, that, at 3.15am on the night of March 19, 2008, Glennon was encountered in a Swords nursing home corridor by a nurse who was investigating an alarm going off in a patient's room. He told her he was visiting his father and left empty handed.

Garda McEntee said Glennon was observed exiting a nearby house by a homeowner who had been woken by noise at 4.30 am. A DVD recorder and passports taken from the house were later recovered. Glennon stole a car from the same house and electrical equipment from a third house in the area.

A fourth homeowner disturbed Glennon later that night in his home and he fled in the stolen car. Gardaí later spotted the car driving through Swords and arrested Glennon.

He admitted breaking into all four premises as well as a fifth burglary, which he had left after telling the woman who disturbed him at about 8am that he was there to read the meter.

Garda Maureen Munelly said Glennon was arrested on November 15, 2005 in Cabra after being spotted exiting a vacant house through a back window with a bag containing electrical equipment and coins.

Garda Michael O'Hanlon said Glennon fled after being disturbed mid burglary by a homeowner in Clonee on September 26, 2006 and was arrested as he tried to hide in undergrowth across the road.

Garda O'Hanlon said all items taken from the house as well as an iPod stolen earlier that evening from a car was recovered from Glennon at Blanchardstown Garda station.

Garda Shane Fitzsimmons said gardaí responded to a call on March 14, 2007 from a man whose neighbour had contacted him in work to say he could see a man breaking into his home in Mulhuddert.

Gardaí gave chase to Glennon, who was spotted fleeing the property and arrested him a short distance away. Glennon also admitted two earlier burglaries in the area during the preceding weeks.

Garda Fitzsimmons said Glennon had 44 previous convictions for a range of offences including 15 burglaries.

Defence counsel Ms Rosemarie Aylmer BL said that Glennon was a drug user who had committed the offences to feed his habit and took "whatever was movable".

She said he had not used violence or physical contact at anytime and wished to apologise to his victims.

Ms Aylmer said Glennon had admitted all the offences when questioned and had co-operated with gardaí. She said he had apologised at the time to some of the people who had disturbed him mid burglary.
