A murder hunt was under way in the North today after a man was shot dead as he slept.
The man, 28, was in bed in a house in the Fountain Hill area of Derry at around 3.30am when he was shot.
Police said two men burst into the bedroom and shot their victim several times.
A terrified 24-year-old woman in the room was unhurt.
Detectives in the city said they were trying to establish a motive for the killing.
They appealed for anyone with any information about the murder to contact them.
They were particularly anxious to get information about a green Vauxhall Cavalier seen in nearby Spencer Road soon after the shooting and which may be connected.
Sinn Féin Derry City Councillor Lynn Fleming said there was no place in society for such behaviour. "What we don't want after 35 years of conflict is a gun culture, we want to get away from those days.
"I express my condolences to the young man's family. I am shocked at this turn of events and I totally condemn the murder of this young man no matter the motivation of those involved.
