A 41-year-old man has been remanded in custody in relation to an incident in which a young girl and two men had hot water thrown over them.

The three-year-old girl suffered minor burns to her face during the incident.

Martin Kernaghan, from Dumlin Grange, Ballyward was charged with intending to cause grievous bodily harm and with assault causing actual bodily harm in a house in Ballyward last Thursday.

He was remanded in custody at Newry Magistrates' Court. His solicitor asked the judge whether Mr Kernaghan could be put on suicide watch.

The solicitor said his client had been recently released from a psychiatric unit against his wishes. The judge said this would be conveyed to the prison authorities.
