Man rang 999 to beg for life as wife stabbed him to death, court told
A court has heard a woman on trial for murdering her husband told gardaí that she wanted a fresh start with decent money and he would not sign the house over.
Forty-year-old Tanya Doyle admits that she alone killed Paul Byrne at their home in Pairc Gleann Trasna, Aylesbury in Tallaght, Dublin on September 4, 2009, but she denies his murder.
The court heard that as Tanya Doyle stabbed her husband more than 60 times with a knife, Paul Byrne dialled 999, begging for his life in a phone call that lasted more than eight minutes.
Opening the case, prosecution barrister Bernard Condon said gardaí arrived to a scene of horror and arrested the 40-year-old, who told detectives she had meant to kill her husband.
She said she "wasn't going to be done" for attempted murder, that she wanted a fresh start with decent money and he wouldn't sign the house over.
In a later garda interview, she said she didn't mean for him to die.
The jury was told the couple were married in 2001 but separated some years later.
Tanya Doyle admits killing her husband but denies murder. There will be medical evidence exploring her mental state at the time.
