A Polish man, who handcuffed and raped his friend in her Dublin apartment, has been jailed for 12 years.

The 32-year-old man pleaded guilty to two counts of rape, one count of aggravated sexual assault and one of false imprisonment on September 15, 2010.

The court heard the accused missed his bus after a night chatting and having food and it was agreed he could stay the night at her Dublin flat.

Later that night, the victim awoke to find him placing handcuffs on her and for the next two to three hours he raped and sexually assaulted her.

During the attack, he took photographs, threatened her with a kitchen knife and forced her to wear a dog-collar.

He said if she told anyone "there would be consequences for her family in Poland".

Jailing him for 12 years, Mr Justice Paul Carney noted the accused would be a foreigner in an Irish jail but he said the composition of our prisons has changed dramatically in recent times.
