The incident happened outside a gym in Balbriggan this morning.

It is the second time in the last four years that the man has been the victim of a gun attack.

The man was shot at a number of times as he left a gym in the Balbriggan Retail Park after 11am this morning.

The victim - who is known to gardai - was hit at least twice in the upper body.

Emergency services were called to the scene and the man was rushed by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital for treatment.

His condition is being described as critical.

The man survived a previous attempt on his life when he was shot in a bar near his home in Bettystown in Co Meath in 2010.

Today's shooting happened close to play centre for children which was open at the time.

A team from the Garda Technical Bureau is carrying out a forensic examination of the scene, which remains sealed off.
