Gardaí at Mountjoy in Dublin are investigating a serious stabbing incident in the North Strand area of the north inner city at around 10.45pm yesterday.
The 45-year-old victim was rushed to the Mater Hospital where his condition is described as critical.
Gardaí said he was attacked by another man and is understood to have received multiple injuries to the abdomen, chest and back. It is reported he went into cardiac arrest on his way to hospital.
Bloodied handprints on the bonnet of a car parked outside a chip shop on the North Strand Rd mark the spot where the attack took place.
It is understood that a row broke out between two men inside the take away and that one of them armed himself with a large knife.
The area remains sealed off and Gardaí have also partially covered a silver Toyota that the victim seems to have collapsed on during the attack.
No arrests have been made, and investigations are continuing.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them at Mountjoy garda station on 01 6668600, the Garda Confidential Line 1800-666-111 or any garda station..
