A 31-year-old man has gone on trial for allegedly stabbing his wife and killing a relative of hers at an apartment in Drogheda, Co Louth.

Shahzad Hussain of Fitzwilliam Court, Dyer Street, Drogheda denies murdering Muhammad Arif and causing harm to Rashda Bibi Haider in January 2011.

The jury today heard that Shahzad Hussain and Rashda Bibi Haider met for the first time on their wedding day in their native Pakistan in 2006.

Opening the case, the prosecution said Ms Haider subsequently found work in Ireland and was joined by her husband when he got a visa in 2010.

They lived for some time at an apartment in Dyer Street in Drogheda with her relative Muhammad Arif until unhappy differences arose in the marriage and they went their separate ways.

However it is alleged that when she returned to the apartment in January last year Shahzad Hussain gained access and stabbed both her and Mr Arif in the liver with a knife from the kitchen.

The jury heard Ms Haider came through life-saving surgery but Mr Arif died from his injuries the following day.
