Man found dead at waste disposal site may have been crushed to death in bin
Gardai are investigating whether a man whose body was found at a waste disposal facility had been sleeping rough in an industrial-sized bin and was crushed to death.
Staff working for Panda in south Dublin were unloading the contents of a bin lorry when they made the grim discovery shortly before 9am.
Officers believe the Polish man died accidentally and was not the victim of foul play.
A senior source said: “It is looking like a personal tragedy at the moment, but that could change.”
Gardai said the victim, who was in his 30s and suffered horrific injuries, has been identified.
Investigators are trying to determine if he was homeless and sleeping in a large wheelie bin when it was emptied.
The bin’s contents were crushed and compacted before it was emptied at the Ballymount Road facility in Walkinstown.
The man’s body remained at the Panda depot for several hours while forensic officers and deputy state pathologist Michael Curtis examined the scene.
It was later taken to Tallaght Hospital where a full post-mortem examination was being carried out to examine the exact cause of death.
It is understood the victim was carrying identification papers when found.
