Man drowns in Ballycotton Bay

A 61-year-old man tragically drowned yesterday afternoon after he got into trouble swimming in Ballycotton Bay, Co Cork.

A 61-year-old man tragically drowned yesterday afternoon after he got into trouble swimming in Ballycotton Bay, Co Cork.

Efforts were being made today to contact the man’s wife, who is in Italy.

The man, from Limerick, was a regular swimmer but got into difficulty at around 4pm.

He worked for Limerick County Council.

A Ballycotton-based angling boat spotted a body floating in the bay at around 4.15pm.

The crew recovered the body from the water and raised the alarm.

The body was transferred to the Ballycotton RNLI lifeboat boarding boat and then brought ashore to the lifeboat station.

A post-mortem examination was taking place today at Cork University Hospital.

The death is being treated by gardaí as a tragic accident.
